Monthly Maintenance Plans

If you are running ANY version of GoldMine, Standard Edition, Corporate Edition, or Premium Edition, hopefully you are well aware of how important it is that maintenance be performed on your GoldMine databases to keep them healthy and reliable.  Whether it is performed in-house or by a qualified GoldMine partner, maintenance should be done, on average, at least once a month, depending upon your database usage.  Here's what you all need to know.

·         Backup your GoldMine EVERY NIGHT.  For many businesses, losing even 1 days worth of e-mails and history is huge.  If you have to restore to an old backup, how far do you really want to go?

·          Backup ALL of your GoldMine files.  Incremental backups are fine for some things, but do you really want to search through various backups to piece together your GoldMine?

·          ROTATE your backups.  Too often we get calls from customers with data issues that started the day before or earlier to find that the only backup available was lasts nights backup and that backup has the same problem.

·          If you are running Corporate Edition or Premium Editions make sure you have SQL Backups and SQL Maintenance Plans configured to run automatically. Even SQL needs maintenance. That's why Microsoft provides those tools within SQL.  Also, many backup applications CAN NOT backup live SQL databases.

·          Make sure your GoldMine data is HEALTHY.  Most companies don't realize that over time GoldMine might end up with hidden duplicates, missing or orphaned records.  If you want your filters and searches to be accurate, your GoldMine data must be clean.

·          Run full maintenance WITHIN GoldMine.  Though this means something different depending upon whether you are running Standard, Corporate, or Premium, it is crucial to run this MONTHLY.  If you are running Corporate Edition 6.7 or earlier please consult your partner before running this maintenance.

Need Help getting?  180° Solutions offers Monthly Maintenance Plans to insure this is completed regularly.  Plans start at $100 per month and pricing varies per GoldMine version and customer environment.  What to run them yourself, we can show you how!

GoldMine News

GoldMine 8.5 Released!

Just before e-mailing this newsletter, we got word that 8.5.1 will be generally available on July 6, 2009.  We expect to be running it through the paces and will let you know what we find.  However, we have been running 8.5 for the last month and are REALLY enjoying the new features.

For a list of some of what you can expect in GoldMine Premium Edition 8.5, check out last months newsletter by clicking here.

To help you prepare for GoldMine 8.5, here are some things you can do to be ready:

·          If you are still running Windows 2000 Server, or SQL 2000, they will no longer be supported.  However, SQL 2008 ships with new orders of 8.5.

·          If you are still running Windows 98, Windows 2000 Workstation, or Office 2000, they will no longer be supported either.

·          If you are integrating GoldMine with Outlook or Exchange, the 2000 versions will not be supported.

·          Preliminary testing suggests that due to its table structure enhancements, Premium Edition 8.5 may increase your database size somewhat, so maybe its time to revisit server memory and disk space.

·          If you are considering a new server, keep in mind that x64 versions of Server 2008 and 2008 are now supported.

·          Universal Search, which is optional, leverages both SQL Full-Text Search for data within GoldMine and Windows Search for your local/network files.  Leveraging these 2 powerful technologies can also affect CPU and RAM requirements.

·          Make sure your server(s) and PCs all have the latest Microsoft updates approved by your IT staff.

Feel free to contact us for a more detailed list.
